Jen Kolb’s Ochterbeck project was a full first-floor remodel, that included taking most of the rooms down to the studs. The transformation into a modern home interior design was truly spectacular, and capturing this change was a delight. The breakfast nook was turned into a charming powder bath, and the kitchen was opened up to create a better flow to the living area. The staircase was also updated to make a visual impact upon entry, and two home offices were created, which is so relevant in today’s work-from-home era.
I was amazed at how Jen reworked the existing fireplace and created a wall-to-wall built-in in the living room. The visual impact and increased storage were impressive, and photographing these elements of modern home interior design was a joy!
Jen referred to this project as her Modern Colonial project. The architecture of the home is English colonial, and Jen honored this by choosing a very English color palette. She incorporated British colonial patterns and selected classic light fixtures. To keep things feeling fresh and not too stuffy, she mixed in some modern light fixtures and took a modern, neutral approach when selecting materials for the kitchen.
The blend of traditional and modern elements was beautifully balanced. The fresh yet classic vibe made every corner of the house SO photogenic. I loved how the modern light fixtures contrasted yet complemented the more traditional elements!
Jen also worked in some of the clients’ inherited pieces, including a very cool antique astrology wheel, a Bergere chair and ottoman set, some rugs, and a dresser utilized as storage in the office. These pieces added character and a sense of history to the space, making it feel truly lived-in and loved.
Capturing these inherited pieces was like photographing a piece of the family’s history. Each item told a story, and it was clear that Jen had thoughtfully integrated them into the overall modern home interior design.
Jen’s absolute favorite space in this project was the powder bath. The wallpaper, which she described as her dream wallpaper, brought her so much joy when it was approved by the clients and turned out looking stunning. Jen also designed the cabinetry to look like a piece of furniture. The whole room felt quirky and timeless, despite everything in it being brand new.
I was just as obsessed with the powder bath as Jen was! The wallpaper was a dream to photograph, and the furniture-style cabinetry added a unique touch. This room was a perfect example of how a small space can make a big statement in modern home interior design.
The fireplace turned out beautifully with its classic brick and paneling. Jen designed the wall-to-wall built-in in the living room and selected an amazing shade of pinkish/reddish/brown that made a statement without overwhelming the space. The patterned swivel chairs chosen for the living room added a playful yet sophisticated touch.
The built-in and fireplace were two of my favorite elements to photograph. The color palette and textures were rich and inviting, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that translated beautifully in photos of modern home interior design.
When selecting a photographer for your interior design projects, it’s crucial to choose someone who understands the importance of detail shots. A photographer who takes the time to capture these elements will help you tell a comprehensive story of your design. Detail shots not only enhance your portfolio but also provide your clients with a deeper appreciation of your work.
I take pride in my ability to capture these details, ensuring that every element of your design is showcased in its best light. My approach involves exploring different angles and lighting conditions to highlight the unique features of each space. This meticulous attention to detail helps in creating a visually engaging and authentic representation of your work.
