As an interior photographer based in the beautiful state of Texas, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredibly talented interior designers. The collaborations that have resulted from these partnerships have not only produced stunning images but have also allowed us to collectively elevate our craft! In this blog, I’m excited to share some valuable interior design photography tips and insights from my perspective as a photographer on how to foster successful collaborations with interior designers, ensuring a seamless and productive working relationship!
The foundation of any successful collaboration is clear and open communication! It’s essential to establish a strong line of communication from the onset. This involves discussing project objectives, design concepts, and specific shot requirements. As an interior photographer, I find it immensely helpful when my clients give me insight into the project and the story behind the project. This ensures that both parties are on the same page throughout the project!
To capture the essence of an interior design project, it’s crucial that the photographer understands the design vision. I like to take the time to thoroughly review the questionnaire my interior designer clients complete and look at any images, mood boards, or any other materials provided to me. By immersing myself in their creative vision ahead of time, it helps me align with their goals and certainly gets me excited and my creative juices flowing!
When two creative crafts work together and collaborate, magic happens … but it can take some time!! Once the photographer gets set for the agreed upon composition of the shot, then we work together to perfect the shot. Whether it’s adjusting the styling elements and furniture, as well as blocking light, or adding light it can take some time to get it just right. Using a photographer that tethers is crucial in making this a collaborative effort and ensuring you have the exact images you need. Tethering is simply a term that refers to my camera being connect to another device, in my case, a large iPad, so my clients can see what my camera sees live so things can be moved in and out of the frame before the click of the shutter.
Coordinating schedules is a crucial aspect of collaboration. Interior designer photographers often book up at least a month or two in advance, so it’s important to plan ahead accordingly. Being flexible and accommodating with scheduling can go a long way in building a positive working relationship!
As a photographer, mastering lighting techniques is at the core of our craft. Quite honestly, it’s a skill I am always working to improve and grow. When collaborating with interior design photographers, it’s essential to understand that perfecting the lighting for a shot can take some time. I like to work with natural light as often as possible, and if needed, bring in additional lighting equipment to enhance the shot or correct weird color casts that are happening in the room.
Lastly, Interior design photography is about more than just capturing the beautiful aesthetics; it’s about telling a story of the space(s). As a photographer, it’s our role to capture that story. We focus on showcasing the overall flow and feel of the spaces . We also focus on the unique elements of the design that were created for the actual family that will live in the home. Capturing the essence of each room and how it connects with the overall theme of the project.
Collaborating with interior designers as a photographer is an incredibly rewarding experience and so much fun to do! By focusing on clear communication, the project design vision, and respecting that it takes time to get the perfect shots, you can forge strong partnerships. Partnerships that result in stunning interior photography! I hope these interior design photography tips have provided you with some insight on what it looks like for interior designers to collaborate with an interior design photographer, like me!
