As an interior design photographer, I’m constantly amazed by the transformative power of colorful interior design. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Helen & Co on a truly remarkable project that beautifully embodies the essence of vibrant and eclectic design! Helen’s approach to this 1961 island home is a masterpiece in blending mid-century charm with a layered, colorful aesthetic. Through my lens, I had the opportunity to explore and capture the rich details and joyful energy Helen infused into every space.
A Splash of Color
From the outset, Helen envisioned a home that retained its mid-century integrity while embracing a colorful, whimsical twist. Her use of color, particularly blue, pays homage to the nearby ocean. It fosters a sense of relaxation and harmony throughout the house. Here’s a closer look at how this vibrant palette was beautifully applied across various rooms and how I captured these elements to tell a compelling visual story.
Entryway: Making a Bold First Impression
The entryway is often an overlooked space (although one of my favorites to photograph!), but Helen transformed it into a vibrant introduction to her home. She chose a bold, colorful wallpaper that immediately brings joy and good energy. I personally could not stop smiling when capturing each image! Photographing this space required careful attention to lighting and composition to highlight the wallpaper’s dynamic patterns. As a photographer, I focused on angles that would best showcase the entryway’s cheerful and unexpected design. I aimed to capture the space’s vibrant character in every shot.
Dining Room: A Celebration of Art and Light
In the dining room, Helen’s love for art takes center stage. The room features a stunning collection of artwork and is highlighted by a playful blue bubble chandelier paired with a textured table lamp. My approach here was to capture the interplay between art and lighting. By experimenting with different angles and focusing on the details, I aimed to showcase how the room’s design elements work together to create a space full of personality and charm. The goal was to illustrate how the art and lighting contribute to the room’s vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
Library/Office Space: A Cozy Retreat with Mid-Century Flair
Helen’s library/office space is a warm and colorful retreat that exudes mid-century vibes. The space is thoughtfully designed to display a collection of books, one of Helen and her husband’s passions. For this room, I focused on capturing the cozy, inviting atmosphere while highlighting the mid-century design elements. The challenge was to convey the warmth and character of the space through my photography, ensuring that the room’s personality and functional beauty were both prominently displayed!
Primary Bedroom: Cozy, Sexy, and Curved
The primary bedroom was designed to be cozy, sexy, and full of soft curves, and oh did Helen absolutely nail it! It’s a space that feels both warm and moody, with a focus on comfort and sensuality. I aimed to capture the room’s inviting atmosphere and luxurious textures by paying close attention to lighting and composition. By photographing the curves and soft surfaces from various angles, I was able to showcase the room’s intimate and relaxing qualities, emphasizing how the design elements come together to create a serene retreat.
Primary Bathroom: Bold and Elegant
The primary bathroom is a testament to Helen’s ability to create bold yet restrained spaces. The blue tile wall with its gold-flecked grout and modern gold lighting is the focal point of the room, while the rest of the design elements blend seamlessly into the background. Capturing this space involved focusing on the striking contrasts and textures, ensuring that the bathroom’s elegant simplicity was well-represented. By highlighting the interplay of light and color, I was able to bring out the bathroom’s refined and sophisticated character.
